Check out Maureen Dowd's column in the New York Times on Gavin Newsom, the mayor of San Francisco. Newsom received a lot of attention in 2004 when he decided to begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Early in his tenure as mayor, Newsom was considered a political rising star.
